Book Review: Reincarnation Blues

I’ve always loved stories dealing with reincarnation. There’s something romantic about the idea of living multiple lives and becoming a better person through each experience. Add a love story to the mix and I couldn’t say no to reading Reincarnation Blues by Michael Poore. This book had such a unique take on reincarnation and I adored the love story. I give the book 4 stars out of 5 and recommend this to anyone looking for a good reincarnation tale.

The story is about Milo, a man who has lived almost 10,000 lives in a world where you get 10,000 lives to reach Perfection and become part of the oversoul to be at one with the universe. Milo has fallen in love with Suzie, the incarnation of Death. He doesn’t want to reach Perfection, he just wants to be with Suzie. But if Milo doesn’t reach Perfection in time, his soul will be destroyed.

The love story added a fascinating element since it’s working against Milo’s need to reach Perfection. His relationship with Suzie is also frowned upon by the universe’s powers that be. The romance added an extra layer to the story outside of Milo trying to improve himself, which is common in reincarnation stories. Having a character work against Perfection made him seem more human and realistic and raised the question of what happens when not everyone likes the ending we are supposed to reach in the afterlife. Suzie’s story also got a fun arc that I don’t want to spoil, but she made for a fascinating character.

The only downsides were the length. At times the book didn’t seem to be going anywhere fast with all the lives the story covers. I connected to some lives more than others. Some lives thrilled me while others I rushed through. Most lives are present era or futuristic with a few historical ones thrown in. In one of Milo’s lives rape was touched on and then swept under the rug like it wasn’t a big deal, which annoyed me a bit. Milo’s time in the afterlife interested me more than his human lives and I found myself wanting to know more and more about the afterlife souls go to before reaching Perfection.

Reincarnation Blues is the story of a man who has been reincarnated nearly 10,000 times, in search of the secret to immortality so that he can be with his beloved, the incarnation of Death. Neil Gaiman meets Kurt Vonnegut in this darkly whimsical, hilariously profound, and wildly imaginative comedy of the secrets of life and love. Transporting us from ancient India to outer space to Renaissance Italy to the present day, is a journey through time, space, and the human heart.
